„Embers of Nightshade“ (OV: „Nachtschattenglut“) is a black and white silent film with intertitles and original music score.

1923. In the twilight of Vienna’s underworld, the lascivious spy Carmilla V. Karnstein (Flora Schanda), the mad natural scientist Laurenzia Walpurga Hildburg Bingen (Irene Schanda) and the melancholic freakshow actress Vladimirja von Silvanien (Sabine Jelinkova) are confronted with hostile spies, unscrupulous admirers and the tragedy of existence. As their self-determined lives in the midst of bacchanal societies, queer identities, radical reading groups, secret laboratories and shady variety shows are jeopardized by the repression of the „Department Against Unnatural Activities“, the three women become allies and fight the repressive surveillance institution, which is after uncovering their double lives.
In combining the language of a classical silent movie with a radically queer-feminist interpretation of 1920ies’ Vienna, „Embers of Nightshade“ adresses topics of high relevance for today: political resistance, bureaucracy, precarious employment, solidarity and gender issues. A celebration of self-empowerment – queer, libertine, frivolous and hilariously funny!
